Exam Time Story!
My elder one’s exams started from
Monday. Basically I’m a chilled out Mom, or I’d like to think so ;-), but exams
used to bring out the scariest version of me, as per my kids. Well, I don’t
disagree to that. Even my lil one was scared of me and tells me “I’ll do my
coloring very well mom”, she’s only 4. With poor hubby its altogether a
different story, even he sensed the tension and kinda stayed out of my way.
Well, long story cut short, how do you deal with exam pressure?
Here are some of the tips and
mantras i started following and it has made exam time an easy ride for me, Hope
it helps u too.
- The
most important Mantra “Each child is UNIQUE”. Accept it and focus on your
child’s ability and strength.
- Know
your child’s concentration span, Study with breaks.
- Time
Management plan is a must. Daily an hour of revising/reading lessons
done go a long way in reducing exam time stress.
·
Repeat the learnt work so the recall
in exam is easy. Work not repeated or revised is easily forgotten..i have
learnt it the hard way.
·
I have made a chores chart for my
kid in which I have allocated time for play, fun activities, reading, daily to
do general stuff etc. This motivates them as they know there is much more to
follow after studies.
·
When your child seems discouraged by
his dropping marks or grades, help your child in maintaining his/her
confidence. Do not impose your anxiety on your child.
·
“Humour relieves tension”. This
always works. Be light and humorous with the child.
·
I tell my childhood experiences and
stories to my kids. I show my children my school pics and share my favorites
with them along with things I disliked. Being rational and normal helps for
them to relate to us.
·
I always try to gain my child's
confidence and discuss problems with them; they need to feel comfortable with
us to let us know their issues. (This advice I apply in everyday life and is
not just subjected to the exams)
The most important point
“EXAMS ARE NOT THE END OF THE WORLD”.
Our children are much more than what
they fare in their exams.
Having unrealistic expectations from
them kills their childhood and besides who even remembers their marks of Std.
5,7.. etc. In today’s modern world, where our children are anyways slaves to
the number of classes, tuitions etc for them to retain and enjoy their
childhood is the most important. Giving each child breathing space, love and
trust goes a long way in bringing out their best qualities academically and
otherwise.
